If i told you to describe a scientist, what would you say?
- a man?
- in his elderly years?
- crazy hair?
- white labcoat?
- glasses/goggles
- holding something vaguely scientific such as a a test tube
In fact your predicitions would be very simillar to google image's answers, in fact i would say that when i googled 'scientist' 98% were male , over 80% were over 70 and more than 50% had crazy hair. After that i google 'famous scientists' again over 90% were male. It seems to me that female scientists don't get the recognition they deserve. Many women scientists feel pressured into looking 'interletual' but 'attractive' at the same time, even if they only work in a lab! Male scientists don't worry about these things they have a get up and go attitude but i wonder if this is because for generations females have been inferior to men. Struggling to get into a proffession that isn't 'sutible' or 'avaliable' for women. I think that it is time for change, the women scientists that i have spoken to today aren't elderly , don't have crazy hair and none of them are wearing labcoats. In fact most of them are young and have bearly started in there career. They describe a world of possibilities in science, so i ask you next time that you describe a scientist bear that in mind and use words like :
- young
- lively
- visionaries
- role models
- inspirational

I completley agree with you ellie, you have written loads about the subject, and have gone into great detail.
ReplyDeleteHi Ellie!
ReplyDeleteYou've made some great points here, and you're right, it is totally stupid that women are still considered inferior to men in some industries, it really shouldn't be an issue in this century... Definitely time for a change.
